South Valley MESA goes to NREL

One of the events that 7th and 8th grade members of South Valley Middle School's MESA look forward to each year is the annual NREL Solar Car Sprints.  The event is held in the parking lot of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Golden, Colorado office.  MESA students compete against other Front Range MESA students in this annual event in which they design and build a solar powered race car in the weeks prior to the competition.

Team Josh and Scott designed and built their car in the style of a NASCAR racer and dedicated the car to the memory of Dale Earnhardt.  Team Sean and Lee also modeled their car after the NASCAR racing machines.  Both teams competed in the sprints but did not have any success.  Unfortunately one car ran backwards and the other failed to start, even though both teams had many successful prior runs.  The day was not a total loss as Team Josh and Scott received a Third place trophy for the design of their Dale Earnhardt inspired car and a good time was had by all.
