Introduction

The Task

1. Find the total cost of your school supplies by using a shopping list.
2. Then,  use your shopping list to create a two page newspaper advertisement for a fictitious store
3. Finally on lined paper explain how you found the total cost of all your school supplies.   

The Process

   To begin,  you will need to:

• Create a shopping list for your school supplies.  You may use this 7th Grade supply list.  (you do not need to include your PE clothes).  

• After creating your shopping list you may use both newspaper ads and the following resource to price your supplies.   Office Depot,  

• When you have all of your supplies priced, you will need to create a  neat and colorful hand-drawn advertisement.  Please use your colored pencils for this assignment and not your markers.  Remember your advertisement does not have to contain all the items that are on the South Valley Middle School supply list. 

• Finally, you will need to write an explanation telling how you figured out the cost of each item on your list and the total cost of all your school supplies.  

• Challenge: The tax rate is 6% on school supplies; what is the total cost of your supplies including tax?  If Office Depot offers to give SVMS a rebate of 5%  for the cost of all school supplies purchased at Office Depot by SVMS' students, how much money can SVMS receive as a rebate if all 220 SVMS students buy all of their school supplies at Office Depot.  Explain how you solved for the tax amount and the total rebate amount.
